Are you a big fan of Shadow the Hedgehog? Do you love the character development and backstory of one of the most complicated characters in the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise? So are we!
Unfortunately many years of character development is being wiped away by decisions made at SEGA. We’re here to send a message to SEGA that the recent handling of Shadow as a character is not being well received by fans and that a reverse in their decision is highly recommended, that they need to #RespectShadowsLegacy . Interested to learn more about our campaign? Read on!
This website was developed in response to the continued mandates and policies that SEGA has created in regards to Shadow as a character; policies that take away from Shadow’s personality rather than enforce them.
Shadow was once seen as a deep character, emotionally damaged, shaped by the trauma he faced in his past; and the things he’s done to push past his trauma and keep his promise to his best friend Maria: To protect the world and give the people a chance to be happy.
He’s been manipulated by his creator for revenge; and his mental health has made him anti-social, finding it difficult to work with others and doing whatever it takes to meet his goals.
He’s shown respect for Sonic the Hedgehog for his strength and convictions to help others. He’s bonded with team mates Rouge the Bat and E-123 Omega as fellow outcasts with a common cause.
But all of this no longer seems to matter to SEGA. It seems that the company is seeking to reshape Shadow’s image as a complete antisocial loner who doesn’t need any help from anyone, doesn’t help anyone, and fights for no one BUT himself.
These mandates spit on Shadow’s legacy as a character, and the fans of Shadow are completely unhappy with SEGA as a result.
This website serves to amplify the voices of the fans; in the hopes that SEGA will hear the valid criticisms of the mandates and seek to reverse course.
We ask SEGA to restore Shadow’s character and to #RespectShadowsLegacy.
You can start by spreading the news of this campaign to every Sonic related media you visit. Start using the hashtag #RespectShadowsLegacy when talking about Shadow as a character on social media (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, etc). Tag SEGA and Sonic the Hedgehog’s social media accounts with these messages (BUT DON’T HARASS THE FOLKS RUNNING THE ACCOUNTS. THEY ARE VERY NICE PEOPLE AND DON’T CONTROL POLICY!!!)
Post about the campaign on your favorite Sonic sites in the appropriate sections of a message board (follow the local rules please!).
Send suggestions to Sonic news media outlets about covering the campaign (if they haven’t already!).
Tell your friends!
Join our Discord chatroom #respect-shadows-legacy on the Sonic Revolution Discord server and join the discussion to make suggestions and ideas about how to further help the campaign - https://discord.gg/r3gJTnHTpv
Throughout the year, we will host Rally Days on social media. This is the big push to get as MANY people talking about #RespectShadowsLegacy in the attempts to go viral and get noticed by SEGA.
Our first Rally Day is Tuesday, JUNE 21st (close to Shadow’s birthday!)
Why should I care about how SEGA portrays Shadow?
Some would claim that character portrayal doesn’t matter, and that the only thing that matters is SEGA putting out a good game.
While good gameplay is important, many video games are driven by story as well. There are many who play games for the tales they tell. The gameplay lets the player interact and become more immersed in the world. But you can’t tell a good story in a game if characters are emotionally stunted and unable to grow and learn.
Shadow, in the first 10 years of his existence, had stories that developed him as a character; but SEGA’s attempt to reimage and market Shadow as an ‘edgelord’ has become a major stumbling block for the company, as many of his fans can no longer connect to Shadow as a character, much less the story he is portrayed in. Gameplay no longer becomes relevant and such a game will be quickly cast to the wayside as just another average game with short-lived sales; this would be considered bad for the company’s bottom line.
